Established in 1973 by a group of local artists, SAW has become a prime destination for contemporary art in the National Capital Region. We are a leading artist-run centre in Canada, with a reputation of being bold, challenging and incredibly friendly. Named as an acronym for Sussex Annex Works, SAW originally founded its experimental space on the second floor of the legendary Café Le Hibou. In 1989, we moved to our current home in Ottawa’s historic Arts Court building located in the downtown core. SAW organizes and presents multiple exhibitions in our gallery space, and hosts over 150 cultural events a year in our Club. We welcome over 1,000 performing, media and visual artists, and close to 35,000 visitors annually — making SAW one of the most dynamic and established contemporary art spaces in Canada for 40 years and counting. As a nationally recognized artist-run centre, SAW has contributed immensely to Ottawa, Gatineau and the national cultural landscape, enabling many generations of artists to present their work and find their voice.
