Estab­lished in 1973 by a group of local artists, SAW has become a prime des­ti­na­tion for con­tem­po­rary art in the Nation­al Cap­i­tal Region. We are a lead­ing artist-run cen­tre in Cana­da, with a rep­u­ta­tion of being bold, chal­leng­ing and incred­i­bly friend­ly. Named as an acronym for Sus­sex Annex Works, SAW orig­i­nally found­ed its exper­i­men­tal space on the sec­ond floor of the leg­endary Café Le Hibou. In 1989, we moved to our cur­rent home in Ottawa’s his­toric Arts Court build­ing locat­ed in the down­town core. SAW orga­nizes and presents mul­ti­ple exhi­bi­tions in our gallery space, and hosts over 150 cul­tural events a year in our Club. We wel­come over 1,000 per­form­ing, media and visu­al artists, and close to 35,000 vis­i­tors annu­ally — mak­ing SAW one of the most dynam­ic and estab­lished con­tem­po­rary art spaces in Cana­da for 40 years and count­ing. As a nation­ally rec­og­nized artist-run cen­tre, SAW has con­tributed immense­ly to Ottawa, Gatineau and the nation­al cul­tural land­scape, enabling many gen­er­a­tions of artists to present their work and find their voice.
